- Choose the reference A (440Hz, or generally 442Hz).
- Play the note you usually tune to.
- Check the accuracy of the tuning:

The cursor is in the middle: you are perfectly in tune!

The cursor is on the left: you're too low, you need to push the mouthpiece.

The cursor is on the right: you're too high, you need to pull the mouthpiece.
Too high: I pull the mouthpiece (the tube becomes longer, so it sounds lower).
Too low: I push the mouthpiece (the tube becomes shorter, so it sounds higher).
Before orchestra rehearsals, all wind instruments in the woodwind family tune to a real A or a real B♭, the note they tune to depends on the type of ensemble:
- In a symphony orchestra: on a real A, thus on an F♯ for an E♭ alto saxophone.
- In a wind ensemble (concert band): typically, the oboe provides the A for the woodwinds and reverts to a B♭ for the brass instruments, hence E♭ saxophonists (alto) tune to an F♯ and B♭ saxophonists (tenor) tune to a B.
Very accurate, very nice
