Tuning your French horn
To tune your French horn using this online tuner, here's what to do:
- Using this tuner, click start
- Click on "allow dacapoalcoda.com to use your microphone"
- Choose the reference A (440Hz, or generally 442Hz)
- Play the note you're tuning to, an F (fingered as B♭) for horn players who think in F, or a B♭ (fingered as B♭) for horn players who think in C.
- Check the accuracy of the tuning:

The cursor is in the middle: you are perfectly in tune!

The cursor is to the left: you are too low, you need to push the tuning slide.

The cursor is to the right: you are too high, you need to pull the tuning slide.
Before orchestra rehearsals, all brass instruments from the wind instrument family tune to a real A or a real B♭, the note they tune to depends on the type of ensemble:
- In a symphony orchestra: to a real A, so to an E for horn players who think in F or to an A for horn players who think in C.
- In a wind ensemble (concert band): usually, the oboe gives the A for the woodwinds and provides a B♭ for the brass, so horn players who think in F tune to an F and those who think in C tune to a B♭.

Choose F as transposition and tune your horn to an F (fingered as B♭), by pulling or pushing the tuning slide.
