Before orchestra rehearsals, all brass instruments in the family of wind instruments tune to a real A or a real B♭, the note they tune to depends on the type of ensemble:
- In a symphony orchestra: on a real A, thus on a C for a B♭ trumpet or on an A for a C trumpet.
- In a wind ensemble (concert band): usually, the oboe gives the A for the woodwinds and provides a B♭ for the brass, so trumpet players tune to a C for a B♭ trumpet.

Choose B♭ as transposition and tune your trumpet (in B♭) to a C, by pulling or pushing the tuning slide.
